TdU Wien Autumn Retreat in Ostia (Roma): Aware Activism

As we do every year at the end of October, we are once again organising the TdU Vienna Autumn Retreat in 2026. This time, we’re heading to the seaside in Ostia (Rome) and will be guided by Hanin Tarabay, who will lead a workshop on ‘Aware Activism’.

Aware Activism: A Trauma-Informed Laboratory

Aware Activism is a creative and reflective space for activists, community workers and everyone that is interested to explore what activism means for them, their causes, and their values through a trauma-informed lens. Using Theatre of the Oppressed, Playback Theatre, and storytelling, we will reflect on how trauma, personal, collective, and structural, shapes our paths of activism, and how we can cultivate resilience, prevent burnout, and nurture healthier, more supportive activist communities. Drawing on Hanin´s experience as an activist through theater and art in Palestine, we will also look at examples of resilience from the Palestinian struggle, offering insights that can inspire and deepen awareness both in solidarity movements and in local struggles for justice and dignity around the world.

Hanin Tarabay is a Palestinian theater maker and trainer who works as a freelance artist across Palestine, the Arab world, and Europe. She tackles oppression and build creative solidarity networks, using the techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed, Storytelling and Playback Theatre.

The workshops will take place both at the premises of our wonderful partner organisation, Affabulazione, and at the Teatro del Lido in Ostia.

Main workshop language will be English, German translation is possible.

Dates: 29 October to 1 November (Please note: departure from Vienna by night train on the evening of Wednesday 28 October; return journey by night train on the evening of Sunday 1 November; arrival in Vienna on the morning of Monday 2 November).

Wie jedes Jahr Ende Oktober laden wir auch 2026 zum TdU Wien Herbst-Retreat. Diesmal fahren wir ans Meer in Ostia (Rom) und lassen uns von Hanin Tarabay als Workshopleiterin zu “Aware Activism” begleiten.

Aware Activism: Ein traumainformiertes Labor

„Aware Activism“ ist ein kreativer und reflektierender Raum für Aktivist*innen Sozialarbeiter*innen und alle, die interssiert sind, um aus einer traumainformierten Perspektive zu ergründen, was Aktivismus für sie, ihre Anliegen und ihre Werte bedeutet. Mithilfe des Theaters der Unterdrückten, des Playback-Theaters und des Geschichtenerzählens werden wir darüber nachdenken, wie Traumata – persönliche, kollektive und strukturelle – unseren Weg im Aktivismus prägen und wie wir Resilienz stärken, Burnout vorbeugen und gesündere, unterstützendere Aktivist*innen-Gemeinschaften fördern können. Ausgehend von Hanins Erfahrungen als Aktivistin durch Theater und Kunst in Palästina werden wir uns zudem Beispiele für Resilienz ansehen und Einblicke gewinnen, die sowohl in Solidaritätsbewegungen als auch in lokalen Kämpfen für Gerechtigkeit und Würde weltweit inspirieren und unser Bewusstsein vertiefen können.

Hanin Tarabay ist eine palästinensische Theatermacherin und Trainerin, die als freischaffende Künstlerin in Palästina, der arabischen Welt und Europa tätig ist. Sie setzt sich gegen Unterdrückung ein und baut kreative Solidaritätsnetzwerke auf, wobei sie die Techniken des Theaters der Unterdrückten, des Storytelling und des Playback-Theaters einsetzt.

Die Workshops finden sowohl in den Räumlichkeiten unserer tollen Partnerorganisation Affabulazione als auch im Teatro del Lido in Ostia statt. 

Der Workshop findet auf Englisch statt, deutsche Flüsterübersetzung ist möglich.
