Inspired by the work of director John Collins and performance theorist Diana Taylor, this workshop invites participants to consider the relationship between text and performance, with a focus on the political possibilities involved in this relationship. Considering text and performance as separate yet connected means of storing and transmitting cultural memory, the workshop investigates whether and how this relationship can be reconfigured to resist structures of power. Using the same text but different repertoires, participants devise and stage short performances in groups. We conclude with a discussion of each performance as well as the broader implications of the workshop, especially for activism and the politics of everyday life.
The workshop will be conducted in English. No previous theater experience is necessary and we welcome participants with disabilities but please contact us beforehand if you have any accessibility needs. Please wear workout clothes or loose, comfortable clothing.
